The Dorcas society consists of a group of women, whose sole purpose is to make quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These dedicated women meet once a week from 9 AM until noon every Tuesday in the basement of Calvary Lutheran Church of Minocqua. In 2007 they shipped 260 quilts to Lutheran World Relief. They also make quilts to be sold at the Church's Summer Bazaar. The money they collect at selling their quilts enables them to purchase quilting supplies needed to continue to make quilts. The ladies, over the years, have set up quite an assemble line, from cutting the material, to laying out the quilts squares, to sewing the squares together to make a quilt top. Then the quilt top, batting and bottom of the quilt are assembled. Once again, it is sewn around and top stitched around the edges. The final phase is to tie the quilt with crochet yarn or thread. The Dorcas Society is always seeking donations of material, used sheets and pillowcases, and of course they willingly accept cash donations. Dorcas Society could always use sheets and light blankets For making quilts. They can be dropped off during office hours, Church hours and on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 11:am The congregation at Calvary Lutheran Church and the community have over the years been very generous to us with their donations so that we can continue to do the Lord's work. The most important need of the Dorcas Society is volunteer help. If you don't think that you could do this kind of work because you don't sew, join us and we will find a job for you. We welcome anyone who would like to join our group. Contact the Church office at 356-5080. |
