The Altar Guild has the duty of preparing the altar and church for worship. Altar Duty consists of approximately one hour on Saturday to clean the Chancel, change linens and set up the communion vessels and on Sunday after services to remove and clean the communion vessels. On Tuesdays mornings, the group gathers to do some housekeeping chores such as fill the oil lamps, iron linens, clean the baptismal font and water the plants after which they work on special projects which include the sewing of banners and linens and making handicrafts for the Summer Festival and Fall Craft Sales.
Profits from the sales are used to purchase items such as new Paraments, Communion supplies and supplements for the Lutheran World Relief Kits.
The Lutheran World Relief Kits are another project of the Altar Guild. There are four baskets on a table in the Fellowship Hall for the collection of items for the four different Kits. The Altar Guild works all year on collecting and bundling the kits which are boxed for shipment in the fall. Some of the items such as diapers, receiving blankets and school bags are sewn by the group. New members are always welcome. Members of the Guild are not expected to know or learn all the duties; they may choose the activities that they are most comfortable doing. Not all members sign up for Altar Duty. While some may hate to iron, others find hand washing and ironing the linens an enjoyable way to serve. Some members attend the Tuesday workshops and others prefer to work at home. There is no rule that Altar Duty must be done only by women. Men, teens, couples or parent & child could and are most welcome to serve. “I am only one, but I am one, I cannot do everything, but I can do something. What I can do, I ought to do, and what I ought to do, by the grace of God --I will do”
Items needed for the Personal Care Kits are:
4 Light or medium weight bath-size towel (approx. 52x27), dark color 4 Bath-size bars of soap, any brand, in its original wrapping 4 Adult-size toothbrushes in its original packaging 4 Combs, wide tooth preferred 4 Nail clippers
All items should be
new and in good condition
Lutheran World Relief Kits Totals This year’s Lutheran World Relief kits and quilts have gone on to the warehouse. Thank you to the Neil Anderson family for the use of their muscles and big truck to get them to Park Falls. This year the Altar Guild and Dorcas Society shipped 86 School Kits, 53 Health Kits, 13 Layette Kits, 179 quilts and 70 pounds of soap. Unfortunately materials for Sewing Kits were not donated. Now we start anew with new guidelines for the kits. They have changed the names of the kits as well as some of the items needed. There is a new list for the kits near the LWR table in the Fellowship Hall. Focus On LWR Fabric Kits While shopping out of the area, keep the Fabric kits supply list in mind. Items needed for each kit: Two pieces of cotton or cotton-blend fabric 2 ¼ yards of 60” 3 yards of 44” or 4 yards of 36” One spool of matching thread Also, the Altar Guild is always looking for heavier material
